Onward Project: Portraits of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force
The Onward Project seeks to locate and publish a photograph of every member of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force who served overseas during the First World War 1914 - 18. These photographs are collated into volumes, with each volume containing around 4100 images. Each image is captioned with the name and service number of the individual, plus a reference to the source of the photo. See the sliding gallery to the left for sample pages.
To date we have published five volumes, totaling nearly 20,000 portraits. These have been taken from a wide variety of sources, ranging from private families, through to institutions, museums and newspapers. You can see who we have published so far by downloading the index to the five volumes - simply click the Download Index box below.
Phil from Fair Dinkum Books was interviewed by Karen Hay on National Radio, which explains the Onward Project and it's rationale:
The key to this project is community engagement - we need your photos. If you have any photographs of individuals or groups of those who served in the NZEF, you can send them to us via email or through the Submit page on this site via the link button here:
Index to All Five Volumes of Onward
We have recently launched a new initiative - customised covers for any volume of Onward. Now you can purchase any one of the five volumes of Onward, with a photo, or photos, of your relatives on the front cover. We understand that the Onward Project is a very personal memorial to those who served, thus it is appropriate that the cover of the book is made available to hold pride of place for those who went before you.
The way it works is that you purchase a regular copy of whichever volume of Onward you like from the Bookshop. At the same time you also purchase a 'Customised Cover' - one for each copy of Onward e.g if you buy 2 volumes, purchase two covers. We will then contact you to determine the photo(s) you'd like to see on the cover, and send you a mock-up. Once confirmed, the book will be produced and forwarded to you. This will take a little longer than just purchasing a regular cover, as each book is individually created and printed.
